Sleeping Basset puppy

A couple of weekends ago we had the great pleasure of escorting this little girl, her four siblings, mom and aunt to the Daphneyland Ranch from the Camarillo shelter. It seems mom and two other bassets (auntie, and dad) came in as strays, and one day later the puppies showed up. The shelter is no place for such a sweet little thing. Fortunately the Basset Hound rescue knows just how to take care of them. It was a rough start, mom was not able to take care of the puppies at first, and aunt Zoe (named after our own wonderful hound) stepped in to nurse the pups for the first few days.

I'll be going back soon to get some updated photos of the pups.

Cone Flower Bee

Don't you just hate it when you're working and someone keeps looking over your shoulder. Don't they know you have a lot of pollen and nectar to collect!? Lucky for me, she did not feel that way.

I spent some time hanging out at one of my favorite photo spots. A little nursery near Gelson's on state street. They are always very friendly when I'm wandering around with my camera. They seem to attract a lot of butterfly and bee activity there, I can only assume since they are out in the middle of a parking lot without much other greenery around.

I really like the cone flowers there. This is not my first bee on a purple cone flower shot from there.

Echinacea Honey

So I wonder how Echinacea Honey would taste?

It still amazes me how fuzzy honey bees are if you look close. I guess that's why I like chasing them around with my camera so much. It is nearly impossible to see at this size but there are actually furs between the segments of her eyes.

Kiwi Slices

The Kiwis in the kitchen were getting a little soft so it was time to do something with them. I guess I could have just eaten them... but then I wouldn't have some cool photos to show for it.

Echinacea Bee

I went out today with the intent to try out my new memory card for my camera. I wanted to fill it up once quick to make sure it was working well. I can't think of a faster way to burn a roll of film (or fill up a memory card) than finding some beautiful flowers covered in bees.

I really liked a lot of the shots I took, but this one stood out. I love the background colors, and the bee is absolutely fuzzy!

Evening Bee

My intention was to chase hummingbirds. But they must not have been very hungry tonight. Of course the bees are always good for a few nice shots.

Purple Geranium Flowers

Geranium maderense Full PlantThis looks like a field of purple flowers. But they are actually all on the same plant. This is the top of a "Geranium maderense" it is a wild plant that has big leaves on long stems with a large spherical inflorescence of these beautiful purple flowers (as you can see at the right).

The plant is a biennial, the first year you only see the interesting leaves. The flowers (and resulting seeds) come the second year. After that the plant usually dies. Fortunately, it re-seeds easily and can even have pups come up from the roots.

Unfortunately this guy was not for sale, he was just the display plant. But I did bring home his little brother. :-D This, and a VERY cool Ginkgo bonsai tree are the reasons I waited to get yesterday's cactus at the succulent show!

Hummer-Hawk

Hummer-Hawk

She looks like she is perched, just waiting for lunch to scurry by. The only problem with that is flowers usually don't scurry.

In reality, she is stretching her neck out and tilting her head back and forth trying to figure out why there is a strange creature with a 300mm nose stalking her.

Peach... err Tomato Fuzz

The sun was beautiful this evening. My wife and I were playing with our plants in the back yard when she pointed out a few new buds on this tomato plant. (the little round things in the upper right)

I'm so excited! I just love tomatoes Most of the ones you get in the store are tasteless. But this plant passes the first test, it smells just like my grandfathers garden. (that is the way I pick a good tomato) It was my job to help him find the ripe tomatoes on his plants when I was visiting.

Purple Fuzzy!

A.K.A. Hummingbird Lunch!

The hummers really love this bush and if it tastes half as good as it looks I can understand why!

Abstract Pink Fuzzy

Not entirely sure what kind of flower this is, but I really like the abstract look of the shot.

Poppy Buds

I used to take off a little early for work, just to go take pictures. This was one of the shots I got at La Cumbre Plaza, on upper state street. I actually got quite a few nice shots from those morning trips through there.
