Icing Rose
This is one of several small roses we got recently. The color of this one reminds me of a nice butter-cream frosting rose. And I would write more but I have to go get a snack now, it's making me hungry!

White Rose
Well I am sill not traveling far from home. This is from my neighbor's yard. He has some amazing roses. Perhaps after I finish one or two of current huge projects I can get a different perspective. :-D

Night Blooming Epiphyllum
Another one of our Orchid Cacti
started it's show this evening. From what I read this is
more what they are like in the wild. This beautiful
blossom opened up as the sun was going down.
The flower has a great fragrance and it is about twice the size of
the flowers on our big day-blooming Epiphyllum.
It is at least 6" from tip to tip of the outside petals,
with the cup of petals in the middle being over 4".
Most of the wild Epiphyllum blossoms last only one night
and fade by morning so I wanted to get a shot of this right away.
This is the first time this guy is blooming since we got him,
so I don't know exactly what to expect. But,
If I can get him in full sunlight
I will try to get a nice shot with some reference to the size.
So, blooms at night, Has a blossom the size of a salad plate that is
white and fragrant that you could see even if you were flying around half blind.
Can you tell what they are trying to attract?

Backlit Stars
These beautiful little flowers are going wild around here
right now. No wonder, it is one of the rainiest Marches EVER.
They said on the news today that there has been record snow
on the mountains in California, as much as 16 FEET!
As with so many of my nice nature shots, this one is credited
to The Hound, during a nice hound walk.

Miniature Rose
Look what followed us home from the grocery store!
When we went to the store today we found a cart with miniature
roses on sale for $1.99. That was too much to pass up!
This guy and two of his friends got to come home with us.
Of course, that started me thinking about taking pictures.
So when we stopped at the second store, I was immediately drawn
to the flower display to a really different orange flower.
Stop by the site tomorrow to see that one. :-D

Backlit Lily
Well there have been quite a few Calla Lilies
on the photo of the day lately. But thats
because they are going wild around here!
This one is a little different than my usual razor
sharp feel, but I like the painting feel of it
especially the leaves in the background.

Freesia Buzz
This image was one shot before yesterday's photo of the day.
It was a good walk with the hound. Maybe because it has finally warmed up a little
during the day. (Personally I liked the snow! But I am not conscious early enough
in the morning to go play in it before it melts :)

Calla Lily from the Shadows
There are beautiful things all around. As with many of my photos, this one was as close as my back yard.

White and Yellow posies
Not sure exactly the variety of flower. They line the streets in Monetery. My botany expert is already asleep since it is almost 4:00am. When I figure it out, I'll post it here.

Icelandic Poppy Closeup
I've had some fun with this image, somehow it seemed like it just wanted to be an Easter card.

Carmel Lilies
Ahh September was a busy month, and I got a little behind.
When that happens I like to come back and put things in these
spaces for those of you who come looking. (Oh, and if you haven't
found it yet, there is a link in the upper right corner to a
calendar that displays thumbnails of the photos.)
This is a different view on the lilies in
the photo of the day from April 22.
I usually carry a number of lenses with me, especially in a
beautiful place like Carmel. And, I rarely take one shot
from one angle. I have learned from taking photos with my best friend
to explore as many angles as possible.

Monterey Rock Rose
This flower was from a morning Basset walk in Monterey. These bushes
line many of the streets in the cannery district of Monterey where
we were staying. There are several different varieties of them
and I will have photos of the others in the coming days.
I just scanned a few more rolls of film from my recent trip
to Monterey. It is a slow process. I am a bit fanatical about
getting detail out of the slides. So I push my scanner to the
limit and I only get about 40 scans on a DVD. But I think it
is worth it. I catalog the images on my computer and when I am
ready to make a print for a show I do not have to go find the slide
and scan it again. (I am much more organized in cyberspace than real
space) :-)
Incidentally, this is one of the main reasons I still don't use a
digital camera for "real" photography. To get a camera that would
come close to the resolution that I can get from film and a scanner
would cost $8000. (that still would not compare to the bit depth,
the number of colors. Which is what allows me to pull detail from the shadows)
And really, I would rather have an $80 camera
with me everywhere than an $8000 camera wrapped in bubble wrap at home.
The other reason I stick with film is I really like the film feel.
I am planning on renting some of the new digitals in the near future
just to keep up on what they can do and see if they are getting close.
But I have not seen anything convincing so far. I also like to be
able to encourage people to get into photography if they are interested.
Most people think it takes a huge investment. But it is more an
investment in time and love.
