Athena the Barn Owl
This week I made it over to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. Although I was especially looking forward to the Butterflies Alive exhibit, on the way to the pavillion we bumped into this beautiful creature. (You may have noticed, she's not a butterfly!) This is Athena, a beautiful barn owl who was rescued after being hit by a car left her with limited eyesight. With limited depth perception she has trouble landing on perches and would not be able to catch food in the wild. Athena and her friends (a group of seven raptors, including Max a great horned owl and several falcons) were adopted by the Santa Barbara Autobon Society when it was determined for various reasons they could not be released back to the wild. You can learn more about them at their website http://www.eyesinthesky.org/ And you can meet them at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History most afternoons (check their online calendar for times... http://www.sbnature.org/ ).

Whale's Eye View at the Wharf
Did you ever wonder if it was possible to have an aquarium so big you could keep a pet whale? It would seem I'm not
the only one who ponders these things. This is the Ty Warner Sea Center on Stearns Wharf. They have created a wonderful
place to learn about the ocean and its inhabitants, as well as a home with an amazing view for a beautiful whale.

Monarch Profile
Monarch Butterfly [Danaus plexippus] on a Zinnia at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History's Butterflies alive. It took a bit of manuvering to get the profile shot I was looking for, and although there are many more opportunities at the Natural History Museum, it's still fun to try to get just the shot you're looking for.

Zebra Heliconian Butterfly
Zebra Heliconian butterfly at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History's Butterflies Alive display. The museum allows you to wander in an enclosed area full of hundreds of butterflies this time of year. It's a wonderful experience!

FROGGY!
Stupid photographers! They keep pushing that silly button
on my exhibit that turns the light on... no wonder I have red eyes!!
Don't they know I am nocturnal?!
We went to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History today.
They usually have a live butterfly exhibit this time of year,
but they did something a little different this year.
Although it was not as big as we had expected, there were
some pretty cool things to see and hear.
My wife is still hoping for a turtle exhibit sometime in
the future. That would be cool, but I think they would
need a lot more room. Fortunately there is a turtle rescue in town!
We'll have to go visit them. Maybe I can even talk her into
SCUBA diving too if I find some place we can see sea turtles.
Well, maybe at least snorkeling. :-D

Zebra on a Flower
I like this shot because the shallow depth of field
makes it look like his wings are fluttering.
This guy is the official state butterfly of Florida.
