Evening Over Stearns Wharf
A nice cool evening out on Stearns Wharf. This is one of my favorite times to be out on the wharf. Most of the shops have closed and the only people out are fishermen or the restaurant patrons heading back to their cars. Of course it's a little harder to get ice cream and candy at this time... but the parking is free!

Santa Barbara Breakwater Twilight
Walking along the Santa Barbara Harbor breakwater at sunset, the perfect end to a really warm day.

Harbor Lights
Hanging around the Santa Barbara Harbor in the evenings this time of year is not only wonderful for photography, but it's a nice cool place... literally! We've had quite a few hot days lately, and the harbor and wharf are my favorite places on a hot day.

Stearns Wharf Harbor Restaurant View
This view is from the end of the Sea Center section of Stearns Wharf. The Sea Center has it's own little wing, apart from the main section of the wharf. An area where you can escape the fray of the restaurants and shops and watch the people go by from a distance. And while you're there you can stop in and learn about the amazing world 20 feet below your feet too.

Elevated Wharf View
One more elevated view of Stearns Wharf. I really liked this spot, but the wind was really picking up so it made me a little nervous to have the camera suspended high above the water. But I'll be back to this spot again in the near future.

Santa Barbara View from Stearns Wharf
Recently I had a request for a cover shot that showed a view of Santa Barbara from Stearns Wharf. I have quite a few Stearns Wharf shots but the client was looking for a daytime shot, and most of my wanderings on the Wharf have been in the evening. This was one of the first shots after I raised the camera in this spot, the sea gull was really interested in the camera. I think he was planning on landing on it. He only thought better of it at the very last second.

Stearns Sunset Reflections
There's no better place to be at sunset than Stearns Wharf at the end of State Street in Santa Barbara. Great restaurants, souvineers and ice cream are all found out here. And they even have been known to film a movie or two out here.

West Beach View from Stearns Wharf
Recently my wife and I spent an evening playing tourist when friends came into town. We took them out to Stearns Wharf for dinner and to watch the sunset. As we were walking back to our car I took the opportunity to get a few shots of the fading colors in the sky. When you live in a beautiful place like this it's a wonderful way to spend an evening seeing it through someone elses' eyes.

Breakwater Sunset
I particularly like this shot from the breakwater because it shows the rough waves on the outside, and the relativly tranquil waters in the harbor.

Santa Barbara Historical Museum Panorama
In the middle of downtown Santa Barbara there are some amazing spots. The Santa Barbara Historical Musuem is a place where you can see the classic spanish architecture that our city is famous for right in the middle of the city.

Santa Barbara Historical Museum
I was looking through some old shots for some photos
that I remembered taking, but did not remember how they
turned out. (Sometimes I take more photos than I have time
to process.) This was one of the ones I was looking for.
It's always a nice surprise to wander back through
my photos and try to find cool things that fell through the cracks.
This was just after a particularly beautiful winter sunset.
The wispy clouds are still reflecting the glow of the sunset
and the lights of the city making the beautiful colors in the sky.

Joe's Cafe
This is from Tuesday night. Tuesdays are farmers' market nights on lower State Street. You can see the booths at the left. The street is closed so it makes it safer, and more interesting, to be down there with my camera. This is about my fourth attempt to get the image I was looking for. There is a large tree (at the left) in front of Joe's. The tree makes for nice pictures, but it makes it a little hard to get a full shot of the front of the building where you can see the whole logo. But, I love a challenge. And this Tuesday my art director (my wife) went with me so that always helps!

Sunset at the Yacht Club
This was taken just a couple minutes after yesterday's photo of the day. The Santa Barbara Yacht Club has a great spot on the beach and a beautiful building. I have walked past it often and pondered a sunset shot. But I never had the timing just right until now.

Santa Barbara Harbor Sunset view from the Breakwater
Another beautiful sunset and another massive image. If you look closely you can see stearns wharf in the image off to the right. (if you have Flash 9 installed, you can use the up arrow to zoom in)

Sunset Wharf Walk
The clouds in the distance are actually our "Marine Layer" (fog) that rolls in to the beach in the evening. It was a good night for a walk on the Wharf.

Fire in the Sky
Another sunset for the people at yesterday's show.
The combination of beach fog and sunsets can do some
amazing things for a camera.
This was a few days after yesterday's shot,
at the same beach. You can see the flag in the other shot too, to
give you an idea of the perspective.

Seal Beach Sunset
Some days it is easier to get up and
go to a photography show than others.
This is one of the days that was really
hard. Not because I don't like the shows.
It is just an amazing amount of work to
set up a nice display, basically from scratch,
each week.
Fortunately, the people always make it worth the effort.
I am always interested in what people like, and this
photo is for the several people today who asked for sunsets.
This beach is known for it's seals.
I really enjoy watching peoples' reaction to my photos.
And, I get very excited talking to them about
photography and the subjects. I'm not just talking about people
who are interested in purchasing prints either.
Almost every time I go out I talk to someone
who is sure I have spent thousands of dollars
on my equipment. And, wishes they had the money to
spend so they could experiment with photography. I am
always happy to inform them they can get the
same camera (and lens) I use for about $70 on
eBay.
Actually, these conversations always remind me of a joke I like...
A Photographer was at a dinner party. The hostess, while
admiring some of his work, told him how much she loved
his photographs. As she looked through the images
she said "Wow, you must have an amazing camera!"
The evening went on and as the photographer was
about to leave he thanked the hostess for her
hospitality and the delicious dinner she had prepared.
As he left, he added "You must have some amazing pots!"
