Silver Falls Golden Hour

Silver Falls State Park in Oregon is an amazing spot where with a relatively mellow hike you can seem some amazing falls. If you're more energetic you can actually see at least 10 beautiful waterfalls, but you don't need to go far to be rewarded. This is South Falls, not far at all from the parking lot on a very nice trail. To give you an idea of the amazing scale, if you look closely you can see a railing that that lines the path passing behind the falls. (Be sure to bring rain gear if you take that path though, even on the sunniest day it's quite wet and cool back there.)

Shoreline Vibrance

Yet another one of those evenings recently that had such vibrant colors from horizon to horizon that you could actually hold your hand out and see the color of the sunset light falling on it. Interestingly, although the moisture came from the same weather system as my recent photos, the clouds this evening were completely different. The thing that was the same though was the beautiful light that bathes everything in such richness. Add that to the natural beauty of Shoreline Park during a nice walk with your best friend and you have a truly memorable evening.

Dolores Sunset

Yesterday the most amazing thing happened. We were out enjoying the beautiful day and water actually started falling from the sky. Unfortunately it came with lightning bolts, so we postponed the walk we were planning on the beach, but it was still a very welcomed change. And by the end of the day the sun streaming through the clouds was so beautiful we decided to try again. As you can see we were greatly rewarded!

La Purisima Mission Bells

La Purisima Mission Bells

This week I visited La Purisima mission. If you havent been there in a while it's a great place to visit. They are always working on some creative example of how life must have been for the inhabitants of the mission. If you wander behind the main building of the mission, where this shot was taken you'll actually find some displays of the mission store, a spot where people working and visiting the mission could trade their goods. And a mill where you can get up close to a mill stone that looks like it's ready to grind flour. All it needs are the burros. Of course don't ask the guys out front, them and their beautiful Ox friend are retired. They just spend time entertaining the visitors and absorbing as much love as they can.

Sunset Dog Run

Dogs always know how to have the most fun, especially at the beach. These guys were racing up and down the beach at Shoreline Park with seemingly infinite energy. Their people, like my wife and I, were more content to just take in the amazing beauty around us.

Just after sunset the colors are beautiful this time of year. This is looking east from Shoreline Park, one of the best places in town for a nice evening walk.

Sunset in the Hills

Santa Barbara is well known for its beautiful beaches and for good reason. But over the years I've found that the locals identify more with my images of the hills and the wonderful hidden perches all around town where you can watch the suset or just enjoy an evening with nature even if you're not that far from downtown.

Evening Over Alice Keck Park

This is Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens, one of the most amazing spots right in the middle of downtown Santa Barbara. At one point they wanted to turn this piece of land into a very large condo development. Fortunately thanks to some dedicated people, we have a place only a couple blocks from our main city street, State Street where you can enjoy a retreat from the concrete and steel (or in our case the stucco and red tile roofs).

This beautiful spot is right off of State Street in Santa Barbara. winding back pathways in the appropriately named El Paseo building, you find yourself in an amazing garden-like courtyard in the middle of a busy city block.

Alice Keck Park Evening Lamp Post

Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens is beautiful any time, but at twilight it becomes almost magical. This was from a nice evening walk a while back. Looking at this image I can almost hear the sounds of the wildlife settling down for the evening. The ducks seem to like to stretch the evening out as long as possible in the park. Trolling the lake for a last snack before bed time.

Multnomath Falls, Oregon

Multnomath Falls, Oregon

When we started planning our trip to Oregon, Multomath Falls was the one thing that I definitely wanted to see. As you can see we definitely made it. This shot was handheld with a fast shutter, I have a few other creative shots I'll share in the near future, some nice long exposures. At around 620 feet tall the falls are beautiful to visit any time of year. And being only 30 minutes to the east of Portland they are easy to get to. Even in the dry days of summer... (yes Portland does have dry days, this was the end of August and they had not had any rain for the whole month.) even in summer, the falls are full and beautiful because they are fed by an underground spring. Still, I can't wait to go back and see what they are like in the rainy season.

Alice Keck After Dark

Looking out across the duck pond at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens standing in the Gazebo. This is a quite long exposure after dark wandering the park. There were still people enjoying the park with their dogs even at this time of day. It was a really beautiful evening!

The end of a beautiful day in Monterey. This is Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove at the tip of the Monterey Peninsula, one of my favorite places to watch the sunset!

Evening At Alice's Garden 360 degree Panorama

At the end of a wonderful evening of photography, I found myself driving by Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens. The look of the glowing lights with the remaing glow of the sunset were enough to make me circle the block to think about what kind of a view I could get. I was glad I stopped. This is from about 20 feet above the edge of the duckpond, looking down on the pond and the gazebo.

Asilomar State Beach Sunset Monterey

An amazing sunset at Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove, California. The Monterey Peninsula has no end of beautiful views. As the golden sunset light stretches across the beaches the show only gets better. The only real problem is choosing just one place to sit and enjoy the evening.

Nojoqui Falls Rock Shelter

Nojoqui Falls Rock Shelter

This little cave-like formation is common at the bottom of a waterfall. The churning of the water easily erodes the rock more quickly than the falling water down the face of the waterfall. I would imagine it would be a much more violent and dangerous place in the middle of a rain storm. But I'll bet it's a spectacular sight!

Cooper Cool

Today we went to the 12th Annual Basset Spring Games. The games are a fund raiser for the Basset Hound Rescue of Southern California. We do their newsletter, the Basseteer so we took the opportunity to get some nice photos for the next issue. But really I just wanted to go to play with the hounds!

This is Cooper, he was looking extremely cool just enjoying a nice day in the park. Aside from just being around a bunch of other hounds and the crazy hound people that love them. The dogs and their food slaves could compete in a number of fun competitions including drooling contests, synchronized swimming, kissing contests and Marathon Napping.

It's hard to take a bad picture of a Basset Hound, and I have about 18 gigabytes of photos to prove it. It was a really nice day!

SBCC Stearns Wharf View

SBCC Stearns Wharf View

Saturday was a beautiful day. We had the opportunity to wander around and enjoy the sunset. Which is one of the things I like to do as much as possible this time of year. This was the view from Santa Barbara City College just a bit before sunset. Sometimes my images are totally controlled and I have a plan for exactly what I'm looking for. In this case I stared with a shot from the pathway that you see. The streetlights were not very interesting looking. But after I got what I was looking for I took a walk around to see what I might be missing. I thought the path looked nice so I got a few shots, but even then I did not notice that the lights were already on. It was only after I got home and looked through the pictures that I saw the glow in the lights and decided this was one of my favorite images.

Pacific Grove Sunset

This is from a couple of nights ago. It was a beautiful evening. Of course right at this very spot the wind was almost strong enough to knock me over at one point. But it was still very beautiful. I'm posing it a bit late (it's not actually the 28th anymore I know!) but I do have a bunch of trip shots to get online. Unfortunately the trip was too short with too many cool things to do. With a couple of projects going now that we are back in town, I'm keeping my system busy processing photos. But I'll get new things online as fast as possible.

Mission Rose Garden Sunset

I really love the fountain by the Santa Barbara Mission. But most people don't realize there is another fountain across the street in the rose garden. It is really worth the little walk, especially at sunset.

If you have been around the site for a while you know that I really like the clouds in the winter around Santa Barbara. Mainly because we don't normally get much weather in the summer other than some very thick low fog in the mornings. Well, this summer has been a little different. Not much fog, I assume because it has not been very cool at night, but lots of humidity. On the plus side we have had some really nice winter-like sunsets. Of course there is one drawback. The night before last was so warm and humid I almost could not breathe. Fortunately it looks like we are starting to get a break from the heat.

A couple days ago I was working on a particularly difficult statistics problem. (mmm math what a concept.) In the midst of my preparations to fling my computer out the window my wife suggested a nice walk at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens. Or as we like to call it... Alice Keck Park Park.

The clouds were beautiful and it was a wonderful evening. I wish I could say I came home and solved the problem right away, but at least I got a lot of really beautiful shots out of it. And I was much happier continuing on my statistics project.

Oh yeah, I've also been tinkering with some other images that are not my own. I have not been able to figure out how to get my own camera there yet so I had to work with what was available.
