'Auku'u (Hawaiian Black-crowned Night Heron)
This is the 'Auku'u or Hawaiian Black-crowned Night Heron. Sounds impressive, like something out of an animated movie about dragons. Like most herons his fishing skills, or at least his standing-as-still-as-a-statue skills were definitely well honed. The only thing was this particular fishing hole was a Koi pond outside of a restaurant in Waikiki. I think the fish were on to him, and many of them were bigger than him. Of course the guy stalking him with a camera while he stalked his lunch probably didn't help much.

Portland Japanese Garden
Stone Lantern and Waterfall at the Portland Japanese Garden. I've always loved botanic gardens, and the Pacific North West has no shortage of beautiful gardens and parks, but one of my favorites is the Portland Japanese Garden. They even have some great Bonsai demonstrations and classes, just in case you're a crazy plant person like me and you want to try to get a little taste of a Japanese garden at home.

Silver Falls Golden Hour
Silver Falls State Park in Oregon is an amazing spot where with a relatively mellow hike you can seem some amazing falls. If you're more energetic you can actually see at least 10 beautiful waterfalls, but you don't need to go far to be rewarded. This is South Falls, not far at all from the parking lot on a very nice trail. To give you an idea of the amazing scale, if you look closely you can see a railing that that lines the path passing behind the falls. (Be sure to bring rain gear if you take that path though, even on the sunniest day it's quite wet and cool back there.)

Storke Tower Across the Lagoon Landscape
This view of Storke tower on the campus of UCSB is taken from the path around the lagoon by the residence halls. What an amazing view those halls must have.

Sandpiper Sunset
The rain isn't the only thing we've been missing this year. The lack of moisture has made it a more timid than usual sunset season. But if there is one place you can count on to get every bit of breathtaking beauty out of a sunset it's Sandpiper Golf Course. Evenings like this make me want to take up golfing just to have an excuse to spend more time there.

Sandpiper Sunset Reflections
One of my favorite spots to watch the sunset, the 18th hole at the Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta. If you want to chase a little white ball around this is the place to do it. Even if you don't know what you're doing you would have to admit this is a great place to spend the day.

Evening Over Alice Keck Park
This is Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens, one of the most amazing spots right in the middle of downtown Santa Barbara. At one point they wanted to turn this piece of land into a very large condo development. Fortunately thanks to some dedicated people, we have a place only a couple blocks from our main city street, State Street where you can enjoy a retreat from the concrete and steel (or in our case the stucco and red tile roofs).

Koi Pond
I love Koi. These beautiful fish are in a small Koi pond in Goleta. From the road all you see are office buildings, but when you explore a bit more you find an amazing peaceful spot with a small bridge over a Koi pomd. They were very cooperative, but I did have to promise them some snacks the next time I'm in the neighborhood.

Alice Keck After Dark
Looking out across the duck pond at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens standing in the Gazebo. This is a quite long exposure after dark wandering the park. There were still people enjoying the park with their dogs even at this time of day. It was a really beautiful evening!

Storke Tower Lagoon Reflection
This view of Storke tower on the campus of UCSB is taken from the path around the lagoon by the residence halls. What an amazing view those halls must have. UCSB is an amazing place to be this time of evening. The combination of architecture, lighting and water makes for some breathtaking vistas.

Evening At Alice's Garden 360 degree Panorama
At the end of a wonderful evening of photography, I found myself driving by Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens.
The look of the glowing lights with the remaing glow of the sunset were enough to make me circle
the block to think about what kind of a view I could get. I was glad I stopped. This is from about
20 feet above the edge of the duckpond, looking down on the pond and the gazebo.

Ahh winter in Santa Barbara! This is from an evening walk on New Years day through Alice Keck Parks' Park (Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens).

Sandpiper Lake Sunset
Sunset at Sandpiper Golfcourse in Goleta California. This little duck pond (or water hazard to the golfers out there) is one of the most beautiful places to watch the Sunset in the Santa Barbara area. The sounds at this time of day are amazing. You are over a hill from the roads and populated areas with so many frogs and ducks that it seems like you are far away from civilization. Although I have never spent enough time to get hooked myself, from this point of view I can really understand the attraction of golf.

Sandpiper Duck Pond at Sunset
A view from the duck pond at the Sandpiper golf course. Of course if you're a golfer, rather than a photographer you might call it a water hazard. But at this time of day there were more ducks than golfers. And even more frogs for that matter!

Sandpiper Golf Course, Virtual Reality
The Sandpiper Golf course is perched right on the coast just north of Santa Barbara and Goleta.
It's a beautiful spot any time, but sunset is especially gorgeous.

Goleta Koi Pond
From the street you would never know this peaceful little spot is here. It's in the middle of an office park. Not sure how the offices are on the inside, but at least it must make for nice breaks.

Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens Gazebo VR
When I posted the image of the day on the sixth
there was a little disapponintment that it was not
a 360° image. Well here it is! Takes a little more
time to build this kind of image.
Of course, this
is across the lake from the other shot, in the gazebo.
This is one of my favorite spots in Santa Barbara.
If you are new to the site and like the 3D images
be sure to check out another one of my favorite Santa Barbara spots.

Alice Keck Panorama
Click the main image for a larger view.
A couple days ago I was working on a particularly
difficult statistics problem. (mmm math what a concept.)
In the midst of my preparations to fling my computer out the window
my wife suggested a nice walk at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens.
Or as we like to call it... Alice Keck Park Park.
The clouds were beautiful and it was a wonderful evening.
I wish I could say I came home and solved the problem right away,
but at least I got a lot of really beautiful shots out of
it. And I was much happier continuing on my statistics project.
Oh yeah, I've also been tinkering with some other images that are not my own. I have not been able to figure out how to get my own camera there yet so I had to work with what was available.

Floating Koi
This was taken at a Botanic Gardens in San Diego California. The blue one is called a "Soragoi Kawarimono" but I am not sure about the orange one. There are a surprising variety of them...

Mission Lily
One of the things I like most about this photo is the small ring of ripples to the left of the flower.
